Amy Hood: The Financial Powerhouse Behind Microsoft's Growth

 Amy Hood, born on August 9, 1971, in Nashville, Tennessee, is an American business executive who has been serving as the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Microsoft since 2013. She is notably the first woman to hold the CFO position in the company's history. 

Early Life and Education

Hood grew up in a family of educators; her father was a medical doctor, and her mother taught nursing. She spent her early years in Morehead, Kentucky, before moving to Nashville. Hood was actively involved in her community and participated in her school's math team. She earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Duke University in 1994 and later obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Harvard University. 

Career at Microsoft

Before joining Microsoft, Hood worked at Goldman Sachs in various roles, including investment banking and capital markets. In 2002, she began her tenure at Microsoft, holding positions in investor relations and serving as chief of staff in the Server and Tools Business. She also led the strategy and business development team in the Business Division. In May 2013, Microsoft announced Hood would replace Peter Klein as the company's CFO. 

As CFO, Hood has been instrumental in orchestrating over 57 deals, including the $7.5 billion acquisition of GitHub in 2018. She played a strategic role in reallocating funds from legacy divisions to invest in growing areas such as cloud computing. Under her financial leadership, Microsoft's stock experienced a nearly 300% increase in the first five years after she took on the CFO role. 

Recognition and Influence

Hood's contributions have earned her recognition on Forbes' list of The World's 100 Most Powerful Women, ranking 63rd in 2013 and rising to 28th in 2021.  In 2023, she was ranked 23rd on Forbes' list and 17th on Fortune's list of Most Powerful Women. 

Personal Life

Hood is married to Max Kleinman, a former partner at Accenture. Together, they are minority owners of Major League Soccer's Seattle Sounders FC.

Leadership Philosophy

Throughout her career, Hood has emphasized the importance of taking risks to build confidence. She has stated, "I didn’t just suddenly become confident. I did it slowly. You start with taking one risk." Hood also advocates for maintaining energy and balance, noting, "Whatever it is that gives you energy, fills up your tank, should be a priority."
